Grenache is a widely planted red wine grape believed to have originated in Spain (where it's known as Garnacha), and is one of the key varieties behind many of the great wines of the Southern Rhône Valley in France, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It tends to produce wines that are medium to full-bodied with relatively high alcohol, offering generous flavours of red fruits like raspberry, strawberry, and kirsch, along with notes of white pepper, herbs, and dried fruits. It's a versatile grape that performs well in hot, dry climates and is often blended with Shiraz and Mourvèdre in the classic GSM style popular in both France and Australia.
