S.C. Pannell – Field Street Shiraz

Steve and his wife Fiona are the driving force behind S.C. Pannell, established in 2004. In many ways, Steve’s journey into winemaking began much earlier—growing up at Moss Wood in Margaret River, one of Australia’s most iconic boutique wineries.

He went on to build an impressive career, working with leading Australian producers including Wirra Wirra and Hardy’s Tintara, where he served as Chief Red Winemaker from 1999 to 2003. His experience also extends internationally, with vintages at Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Burgundy, Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and G.D. Vajra in Barolo.

S.C. Pannell was created to focus on Steve’s passion for McLaren Vale and its ability to produce dry-grown, environmentally sustainable wines. His philosophy is simple—“wines that are grown, not made”—resulting in wines that are expressive of place, balanced and made to be enjoyed with food.

Steve Pannell is widely respected for crafting wines that are both serious and effortlessly drinkable—aromatic whites and reds that are approachable, vibrant and moreish. The Field Street Shiraz is a perfect example: a mid-weight, highly drinkable red that captures his signature style.

His career has been widely recognised, including International Red Winemaker of the Year (1999), Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year (2015), and being named one of the 50 most influential contributors to the world of wine by Decanter Magazine. He has also been described by international critics as “one of the greatest Australian winemakers of his generation.”

A Rhône-like 14 days on skins; matured in large (9000L) oak and a smattering of puncheons. This is gorgeous wine of such imminent and visceral pleasure that it is hard to put down. A myriad of nooks, creases and textural crevices lie within. Drink in a mindless torpor, or with perspicacity. Either approach, a winner! Poise, freshness and danger, the calling cards. Blueberry, seaweed, cinnamon, tamarind, pomegranate and turmeric. The Indian potpourri of exotica with a carnal burr of tannin to the finish. Long and seamless. Just great to drink!
