Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2020 is a distinctive single-site Pinot Noir from Waikari in North Canterbury, New Zealand. Grown on a tiny, biodynamically farmed slope of clay and limestone, it combines expressive fruit with floral perfume, savoury complexity and finely woven structure. Its name comes from fumitory, a wild plant found growing in the vineyard.
- Aromas: Cherry and red berries mingle with florals, white pepper, anise and intriguing sappy notes.
- Palate: Layered cherry fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and fine, gently grippy tannins. Savoury depth and a chalky mineral impression carry through a persistent finish.
- Style: A dry, elegant Pinot Noir with concentration, aromatic complexity and a strong sense of place.
- Winemaking: Carefully hand-sorted fruit was fully destemmed and fermented with wild yeasts. After 21 to 27 days on skins, the wine was pressed and transferred to French oak barrels for 18 months.
- Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar for further development. Store in a cool, dark location. Before opening, stand upright to settle any sediment and taste before deciding on gentle decanting.
- Food Pairing: Pair with roast duck, mushroom dishes, herb-roasted lamb or venison.
A compelling Pinot Noir for those who enjoy fragrant fruit, savoury detail and elegant structure.
Pyramid Valley
Pyramid Valley was founded in 2000 by Mike and Claudia Weersing after a 15-year search for the ideal vineyard site, eventually settling on the dramatic limestone and clay slopes of Waikari in North Canterbury, New Zealand. Guided by biodynamic principles and minimal intervention winemaking, the estate quickly gained recognition for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a profound sense of place.
In 2017, the estate entered a new chapter under the ownership of Steve Smith MW and Brian Sheth, while maintaining the same unwavering commitment to terroir-driven wines that honestly reflect the land they come from.
