The 2022 Neldner Road Steinert Riesling is a premium, beautifully expressive white wine crafted by legendary winemaker Dave Powell under his rebranded estate. Sourced from a high-altitude, single vineyard in Flaxman's Valley, this wine showcases dry-grown, 80-year-old historic vines planted 480 metres above sea level, capturing the pristine purity and zesty energy of an outstanding 2022 Eden Valley vintage.
  • Aromas: Intense lemon and lime aromatics jumping out of the glass, layered with white flowers, orange rind, bath salts, and a fresh wet-stone minerality.
  • Palate: Concentrated and texturally mouth-filling, packed with juicy lime, citrus, and white apple flavors underscored by subtle talc and flinty mineral elements.
  • Style: Crisp, elegant, and powerful, brilliantly balancing a rounded, generous fruit volume with a strong acid backbone and a long, steely finish.
  • Winemaking: Grapes are hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, cold settled, and fermented completely dry prior to cold stabilisation and bottling to ensure clear site expression.
  • Cellaring: Offering exceptional immediate appeal and a scrumptious freshness right now, but possesses the structure and acid line to cellar gracefully through 2033.
  • Food Pairing: Pairs magnificently with freshly shucked oysters, Kingfish ceviche, pan-seared white fish with lemon butter, or spicy Southeast Asian cuisine.

This exceptional white wine represents a brilliant extension of Dave Powell's winemaking portfolio, expertly translating the distinct, cool-climate elegance of ancient Eden Valley Riesling vines with the same uncompromised dedication to quality.

Eden Valley Riesling emanates from a single site in the high Flaxman’s Valley, 460 metres above sea level. The five acre vineyard showcases dry grown, rod and spur pruned Riesling vines now over eighty years old. Grapes are hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, cold settled and fermented dry prior to cold stabilisation and bottling. This approach ensures a clear expression of the great vineyard from which the wine originates.

“White flowers and stone fruits predominate the nose, accompanied by vintage-typical bath salt character. Hints of lavender and lime juice are found, underscored by a fresh wet stone minerality. The palate is rounded, carried through by a fine acid line. Flavours of juicy white apple and lime pith are followed through with grapefruity, zesty acid-derived flavours to carry through to the finish.”

This comes from an Eden Valley vineyard Dave Powell worked with when he was making wine at Rockford. It's a wine of excellent intensity. It shows lime, flint and gunmetal flavours with lemon pith characters through the finish. It has more body to it than you might expect of a young Eden Valley riesling but the length of the palate has not been compromised. It's a very good wine.

Powell & Son

Powell & Son may be a relatively new label, but it is the creation of a man with one of the most formidable reputations in Australian wine. Dave Powell is the founder of Torbreck — the Barossa juggernaut that took the wine world by storm in the 1990s — and he brings that same depth of knowledge and conviction to everything he does.

That inspiration is reflected in the varieties Powell & Son work with: Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro for the reds, and Roussanne, Marsanne and Eden Valley Riesling for the whites — the classic Rhône palette transplanted into two of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, and interpreted with the kind of quiet mastery that only comes from a lifetime in the vines.
