The 2022 Powell Neldner Road Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz is a masterfully crafted, regionally expressive red wine that serves as the quintessential introduction to legendary winemaker Dave Powell's philosophy under his rebranded estate. Seamlessly bridging two iconic terroirs, this release is an equal 50/50 blend of elevated, cooler-climate Eden Valley Shiraz from 40+ year-old vines and rich, low-yielding Barossa Valley Shiraz from 80+ year-old vines, capturing the absolute best of a highly balanced, pristine 2022 vintage.
  • Aromas: Lifted and expressive scents of kirsch, dark plum, and sweet blackberry compote, interwoven with lavender, wild sage, vanillin cedar, and a savory hint of charred meats.
  • Palate: Dense, deep, and lavishly textured, packed with plush layers of ripe plum and liquorice fruits accompanied by complex notes of black olive, fennel, and cracked pepper.
  • Style: Rich and intensely structured, brilliantly balancing the muscular weight and opulent dark fruit density of the Barossa with the perfume, precision, and refreshing acidity of the Eden Valley.
  • Winemaking: Fermented separately in traditional concrete vats to preserve site character before being blended and matured for 18 months in large, premium 4,500-litre French oak foudres.
  • Cellaring: Offering exceptional approachability and a plush mouthfeel right now, but possesses the sturdy backbone and structural harmony to cellar beautifully through 2037.
  • Food Pairing: Pairs magnificently with slow-braised beef cheeks, grilled venison loin, wood-fired ribeye steak, or a hearty wild mushroom ragù.

This exceptional dual-valley blend represents a seamless execution of Dave Powell's signature style, expertly marrying the distinct elegance of premium, elevated sites with the unapologetic fruit power and old-school craftsmanship that defined his global winemaking legacy.

The Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz epitomises the philosophy of Neldner Road: to marry the greatness of the Barossa and Eden Valleys. A 50/50 blend of Eden Valley Shiraz from 40+ year old vines and Barossa Valley Shiraz from 80+ year old vines, the fruit is fermented separately in concrete vats before spending 18 months in 4,500 litre French oak foudres. The blend showcases the rich dark fruits of the Barossa along side the more lifted and delicate aromatics achieved from the Eden Valley component.

The aroma of this wine shows kirsch, lavender, sage and charred meats. It has a dark, brooding character to add further complexity. The palate is dense and deep with ripe black fruits: plum, blackberry compote as well as a cured meats and black olive.

DAVE POWELL

Halliday wine companion (Campbell Mattinson) - 95points

Half-half Barossa and Eden valleys, all shiraz. Dark chocolate and blackberry flavours come lifted with florals – it tastes exactly as you would expect (and hope) of these regions combined. Bright but deep, structured but juicy, the fruit flavours tumbling, joyously, roly-poly, over themselves through the finish

Powell & Son

Powell & Son may be a relatively new label, but it is the creation of a man with one of the most formidable reputations in Australian wine. Dave Powell is the founder of Torbreck — the Barossa juggernaut that took the wine world by storm in the 1990s — and he brings that same depth of knowledge and conviction to everything he does.

That inspiration is reflected in the varieties Powell & Son work with: Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro for the reds, and Roussanne, Marsanne and Eden Valley Riesling for the whites — the classic Rhône palette transplanted into two of Australia's most celebrated wine regions, and interpreted with the kind of quiet mastery that only comes from a lifetime in the vines.
