The Ox Hardy 1891 Ancestor Vine Shiraz is a monumental, ultra-premium, and deeply historic full-bodied red wine from the legendary Upper Tintara Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, South Australia. Crafted by Andrew "Ox" Hardy, this rare flagship release is sourced entirely from a tiny, irreplaceable block of ancient, dry-grown vines planted way back in 1861, delivering an extraordinary combination of structural power, complexity, and seamless grace.
  • Aromas: The nose is extraordinarily complex, layered, and deep, unfolding with intense notes of concentrated blackberry, dark plum, and blueberry paste, intricately woven with hints of expensive old leather, camphor, dark chocolate, and a prominent line of exotic spices.
  • Palate: The palate is multi-dimensional and remarkably concentrated, offering rich black fruit flavours wrapped in a silky, velvet-like texture that remains light on its feet thanks to a fine line of natural acidity and exceptionally refined, persistent tannins.
  • Style: This is a benchmark, world-class Australian Shiraz that balances immense power and depth with incredible poise, moving completely away from simple, jammy fruit to highlight an elegant, age-worthy, and complex personality.
  • Winemaking: Hand-harvested from some of the oldest vines in the world, the fruit is gently fermented in open vats using traditional extraction methods before maturing for close to two years in a selection of premium, fine-grained French oak hogsheads.
  • Cellaring: While it possesses the sheer balance and polish to be an incredible experience right now, this wine is built to age gracefully over decades, comfortably cellaring and evolving for 15 to 40 years.
  • Food Pairing: A wine that calls for exceptional dishes, pairing perfectly with premium dry-aged ribeye steak, slow-braised venison cheeks, roasted game meats, or high-end truffle-infused dishes.

This is a seriously special, bucket-list bottle of wine that carries over a century of history in every single drop. The incredible thing about these ancient vines is how they give you this massive depth of dark fruit and spice without ever feeling heavy, jammy, or over-extracted. It is an absolute powerhouse of a Shiraz, but it has this quiet, seamless elegance that completely stops you in your tracks. It is the ultimate bottle to set aside for a milestone occasion or to share with people who truly appreciate the best of the

2013 VINTAGE & WINEMAKING

The 2013 vintage in Blewitt Springs was preceded by a reasonably wet winter and then very dry spring and early summer. Happily, we had no heatwaves, but lack of water and warm temperatures meant an early vintage in the region – we handpicked the 1891 vine Shiraz on the 19th of February, the earliest on record. Hand-picked from the top section of the 1891 Ancestor Vine block, the fruit was fermented in a two-tonne open fermenter and the skins were hand plunged three times a day. At sugar dryness the wine was drained off and the skins pressed. The resultant wine was transferred straight to barrel and matured for nearly two years in one new and two older French oak barriques. The wine was bottled without filtration in January 2017 and released in April 2025.

Aroma: Dark red berry fruits, dried herbs and
mocha spice

Palate:Elegant, restrained and poised. A wine of integrity
and finesse. Red fruits following on the palate, fine
French oak char and fine grain tannins.

This is selected from Andrew (Ox) Hardy’s favourite rows of the oldest vines on the family vineyard, which also happen to be the second oldest, by a whisker, in the Vale. Fermented in open vats, this was plunged thrice daily, before nearly two years in older French barriques. Whether from the older vines, or those more youthful, the Upper Tintara vineyard shines through. Released with a decade under its belt, this is in a fine place, with tertiary notes knitting into and enhancing the ferrous site signature. Black fruits, blueberries and plums, ground pepper, anise and caraway, pressed violets. It feels so of place, unhurried in elaboration and naturally given the chance to relax
