The Kalleske Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon is a structured, medium-to-full-bodied red wine from the northern western sub-region of Greenock in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. Grown on a single estate vineyard and handled according to the family's certified organic and biodynamic practices, this wine delivers a classic, deeply authentic expression of Barossa Cabernet.
- Aromas: The nose is complex and fragrant, filled with dark cassis, blackcurrant, and plum, alongside subtle notes of violet, tomato leaf, and cedary spice.
- Palate: The palate is juicy and powerful, packed with ripe dark fruits and a touch of dark chocolate, balanced by fresh acidity and a firm line of fine, dusty tannins.
- Style: This is a traditional Barossa Cabernet that focuses on classical structure rather than simple sweetness, balancing rich fruit power with a long, dry finish.
- Winemaking: Sourced from low-yielding estate vines, the fruit is wild-fermented in open fermenters and matured for about a year in a mix of new and seasoned French oak.
- Cellaring: It is approachable now for its pure fruit character, but its robust tannin framework ensures it will cellar beautifully over the next 5 to 10 years.
- Food Pairing: It pairs exceptionally well with robust dishes like peppery sirloin steak, slow-braised beef cheeks, roast lamb, or rich venison ragu.
Kalleske
The Kalleske family have been farming the land near the Barossa Valley village of Greenock since 1853 — making them one of the region's most deeply rooted grape-growing families. Their reputation as growers is such that they were among the select few chosen to supply fruit for Penfolds Grange, one of the world's most celebrated wines.
In 2002, seventh-generation brothers Troy and Tony took the next step — establishing the Kalleske winery and earning certification as both an organic and biodynamic producer. Their philosophy is one of genuine stewardship: not simply maintaining the land, but actively improving it for the generations that will follow.
Since their first release in 2004, Kalleske has built a swift and well-deserved reputation for handcrafted wines of exceptional quality — the natural expression of over 170 years of farming the same Barossa soil.
"Among the select few chosen to supply fruit for Penfolds Grange — a testament to over 170 years of Barossa farming."
