Protero - Nebbiolo
Protero is the result of Stephen Pannell’s long-standing pursuit of great Nebbiolo in the Adelaide Hills. First discovered in 2004 near Gumeracha, the vineyard—originally planted in 1999—revealed its potential through a unique combination of site and carefully selected Nebbiolo clones.
For Stephen, Nebbiolo is defined by its tannin structure, and his approach is centred on understanding and shaping this defining characteristic to create wines of balance and precision.
In 2019, Stephen and Fiona Pannell secured the vineyard after years of working with its fruit. Following significant challenges, including bushfire, they committed fully to the site—replanting and refining the vineyard with varieties suited to the region, while preserving its exceptional Nebbiolo.
The result is Protero Nebbiolo—a structured, complex, and expressive wine that captures both the character of the variety and the distinct identity of this remarkable site.
